This week-long, interactive workshop is designed for elementary classroom teachers and interventionists. Participants will gain familiarity with the elementary math vertical skill progressions and build the foundational math content knowledge necessary to implement and accelerate math learning recovery in the classroom.
Participants will meet virtually for one hour each day, Monday through Friday.

In our opening session, we will take a look at the elementary vertical skill progressions. We will examine the sequential nature of elementary math skills, take a closer look at each vertical strand, and discuss how to use this knowledge to inform learning recovery in the classroom.
This session will begin with an overview of the Concrete-Representational-Abstract instructional model and effective manipulatives + scaffolds to support learning recovery work. We will then examine how number talks and number sense activities can strengthen student math foundations. During this session, we will also hear from special guest contributor, Mick Minas, who will examine the role of games in building number sense. This session will conclude by examining ways in which all of these activities can be incorporated into classroom instruction to ensure a solid foundation in math for all students.
This session will focus on building strong conceptual foundations for students in each of the four operations. We will then take a look at the fact fluency progressions, identify where students may be along each progression, and how to leverage student thinking to build fluency through small group strategy shares.
In this session, we will explore building strong conceptual foundations for students in place value. We will then examine how to build on this foundation to support student work in the areas of computation, comparing, and rounding.
In our closing session, we will examine how to use this elementary math foundational content knowledge to implement classroom-based math learning recovery. We will explore approaches for identifying where students are along the vertical skill progressions and look at effective ways to plan for, structure, implement, and sustain learning recovery in the classroom all year long.
Mick Minas of Love Maths will join us to present on the Role of Games in Building Number Sense. Mick Minas has worked in education for over 20 years. In 2018, he received the CHOOSE MATHS Teaching Excellence Award. He presents at conferences and workshops worldwide and provides consultancy services with a particular focus on building number sense through engaging classroom activities and games.
In addition to the week-long workshop, participants will also receive digital access to presentation materials + resources, an interactive digital workshop notebook including planning resources, and a MasterTrack user license to accelerate student math learning recovery during the 2021-2022 school year.
