Founder Story
The MasterTrack program was born out of founder Torrey Volk’s experience as a middle school math teacher when her learners arrived with large gaps in their foundational skills. Students who had been advanced without meeting previous grade levels were not poised to succeed at their current grade level. Rather than paying the problem forward to the next grade-level teacher, Torrey made it her mission to address the systemic issue.
The solution called for a radical return to the basics: identifying the precise gaps in learning, responding with timely, targeted intervention, and repeating the cycle regularly and often. Easier said than done for an already overburdened teacher! The challenge then became how to make individualized monitoring and instruction easy and seamlessly integrate with grade-level curriculum.
Torrey set about designing a tool to enable this kind of powerful, targeted intervention. The result was MasterTrack. Launched in 2012, it is the first and only of its kind for teachers to easily track and respond to each student’s performance on each foundational math skill. With MasterTrack, educators can ensure ALL students master their basic math skills by the end of the school year alongside their grade level learning.
Over the past ten years, participating schools have averaged 20% gains in math their first year of implementing MasterTrack—and the best-performing school to date saw a 60% improvement.
